The Swift Current City RCMP experienced an uptick in action this past Halloween.

The detachment fielded 16 calls from 6 a.m. on October 30 to 5 a.m. on November 1 compared to eight in 2020 and seven in 2019.

Evan Gordon, the staff sergeant for the City RCMP, attributed that climb to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions last year and in 2019 the festive event fell on a Thursday night.

"Over the weekend we definitely planned for an increase in calls for service, increased foot traffic, (and) again with it be being the weekend," he said. "The weather was a little bit chilly but people were still out and about, so we had extra members out as well as combined traffic services section partners."

Of the more noteworthy calls, they responded to a pair of house parties on Saturday night due to loud music.

"We expected that likely was going to be our busier evening just because most wouldn't have to work so we expected a higher volume Halloween parties," he said. "That bared out specifically in our disturbances."

On Halloween night the RCMP were notified around 7 p.m. of a possible assault taking place on the 100 block of 6th Avenue Southeast

"The most serious event of the weekend was an assault where a youth was accused of assaulting several other youths," he said. "Members responded and that matter is currently before the courts."

They also answered to a trio of mischief calls, although one incident happened before the weekend and the other two were minor, involving landlord issues.

"Not the property damage or abuse of property that has been seen in years past," he said.
