Chainmail made by Swift Current company MailleTec is part of a NASA robot lander, and earlier this afternoon it successfully landed on Mars.

According to NASA, only about 40 per cent of missions sent to the red planet by any space agency have been successful.

The inSight lander launched on May 5 with plans on studying the deep interior of Mars to learn about how other rocky satellites like the Earth and the Moon formed.

The lander descended onto the Elysium Planitia - which NASA said is pretty much a big "parking lot."

MailleTec has designed chainmail for other purposes, such as television shows and movies Game of Thrones, Thor, and The Hobbit.

But for this project they began work with the NASA Jet Propulsion Labratory in 2013 to "protect delicate seismic equipment from heat and dust" according to the company's website,
