A food product has been taken off the shelves of a major retailer after four residents in the U.S. became sick with botulism.

The product affected is Great Value brand Original Chili with Beans and Hot Chili with Beans both in 425 gram cans, and is sold at Wal-Mart.

Dr. Khami Chokani, Medical Health Officer with the Cypress Health Region says the symptoms of botulism poisoning can be serious.  The toxin can result in nausea, vomiting, double or blurred vision, dry throat or dry mouth, and in the worst case, death.

So far, no reports of sickness here in Canada dealing with the product.

The product's manufacturer has set up an informational phone line at 1-800-203-4412 or 1-888-203-8446.
