The number of Swift Current drivers who fail to stop for school buses has been increasing rapidly and the local RCMP are concerned.

This week Chinook School Division is promoting the awareness of school bus road safety, which is why it's a great time to give everyone a rules refresher.

At one of three bus driver professional development events, all forty-seven bus drivers that were in attendance said they had seen someone neglect to stop for their stop arms at least once a day.

"Those stop signs still mean stop no matter where they are," said Constable Tony Curti with the Swift Current RCMP, who works as the high school's liaison officer.

The fines begin at $360, resulting in an automatic four demerit points on your driving record. The fines can even go up to $1,000 if the driver fails to stop for multiple buses.

"Maybe people just need to be reminded," Constable Curti said. "You know those buses are out there, be aware of your surroundings, be aware of the kids out there. If there's buses on the road and kids are nearby it should really heighten your responses."
