One of Swift Current's schools jumped aboard the season of giving earlier this week by making a massive food donation to the Salvation Army Swift Current.

École Centennial School collected 3,297 pounds of non-perishable food items and with the help of TC Energy delivered it to the local food bank on Monday.

The donation from the school is one, Salvation Army Swift Current Lieutenant Renee Mailman, is thrilled to see.

"They send out a calendar to their students... And encourage students to bring in an item from that category on that day," she said.

The contribution from École Centennial School to the food bank comes at a critical time with the Christmas season approaching coupled with an increase in food requests.

"Part of it might end up in our Christmas hampers because we're having some extra food available," she said. "Some of it might end up in our Christmas Eve pack if we have a little bit extra available. Most of it will go towards stocking the food bank for the upcoming year."

Mailman began with the Salvation Army Swift Current three years ago and noted that École Centennial School has done a food drive for them annually.

"There's been a couple of years in a row where we get to the fall and the shelves are getting quite empty," she said. "We really appreciate food drives like this that are able to really prepare us for the upcoming year."
