Construction is expected to be taking place at Market Square throughout the week as part of an expansion to the popular venue.

The City is working on installing a summer canopy for the stage to house performers from weather and provide shade during events, mainly due to the expansion of Market Square.

General Manager of Infrastructure and Operations for the City, Mitch Minken, says Market Square will be closed as well as the parking lot by the Bank of Montreal during the upgrades.

"This first phase is to install some pilings for the poles that will support the canopy, and then once those are installed there will be other times where we will be working away at it to install the poles that will support the canopy and then eventually we will install the canopy itself," he explained. "We're trying to keep the site as safe as we can. We've installed some fencing to keep people away and ensure that the public is kept safe during our construction."

"Market Square has been a very popular event through the summer months in the city here, so this is all part of the enhancements to make it a better experience for everybody that comes out," added Minken.

The initial work phase should be completed by the end of the week, and in addition, traffic will be restricted to one lane on Chaplin Street from 1st NE to Central Avenue today.
