Now that the warmer weather is here, consumers are being asked to use caution with door to door sales.

Communications Consultant with the governments Financial Consumer Affairs Authority, Matthew Barton explains.

"What we see in the summer is a rise in complaints about door to door salesmen selling home alarm systems. Typically the problems come from not reading the fine print or not checking to see if their a licensed sales person."

Barton adds that the key to avoiding some of these problems is to ask the right questions.

"One of the first thing's they can do is ask what the cancellation process is or what if they change their address, what has to happen for them to transfer their alarm system to their new home? And, one of the big one's is finding out if service will be affected if they change their telecom provider."

Additionally, Barton says that consumers who sign a door to door sales contract do have a ten day cancellation window to change their mind without penalty.
