Swift Current City Councillor George Bowditch hopes the efforts of Menno Martens to keep the city clean will encourage others to follow in his footsteps.

The former teacher, who used to consistently clean up litter around the city, passed away on November 16th after a nine-month battle with cancer.

"It just does good, and it will make you feel good if you just help keep our community cleaner," Bowditch said. "It was a very inspirational contribution that he made to the city, because he did with very little fanfare, if any at all, and he just was a citizen who cared about his community, and wanted to make it a better place to live."

Bowditch hopes others can follow the example Mr. Martens set and work harder to take pride in and clean up our city.

"It takes somebody like Menno Martens to help us out and make the community better, and if there's some other people out there that feel like they'd like to maybe help out in the community, things such as that," he added. "If you pick up one cup, that's one less cup that's out in the area, or one less paper or plastic bag and all that."

The funeral service for Mr. Martens took place last Tuesday from Bridgeway Community Church.
