The new Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility in Maple Creek

Maple Creek was the hot spot in Saskatchewan on Friday, many guests and dignitaries came to town for the opening of the Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility.

The facility is replacing the 21 bed Maple Creek Hospital as well as the 48 bed Cypress Lodge Nursing Home. Health Minister Dustin Duncan says it makes the most sense having everything in one place.

"It's ensuring that all healthcare facilities for Maple Creek and area are now under one roof and it makes a lot of sense. It provides a lot of efficiency and it will certainly serve the people in this area and the community for many years to come."

Cypress Health CEO, Beth Vachon, shared her excitement.

"We've had our official opening now of this beautiful facility and I think you can appreciate why we're so excited about the fact that we're now officially open. We've been operating out of this building for a few months now and its a very exciting day. I love the look of this building with all the wood and glass. There's so much natural light that comes in which is good for healing and health. In long term care, I walk in and there's a kitchen which is now the heart of the home and you see people gathered. By creating a different environment, it has created a whole new feel for long term care. We're very proud of that."

Vachon says the building that used to house the long term care has been given to someone within Maple Creek interested in opening a personal care home.

The province covered 80 percent of the cost, or roughly 36 million dollars toward the project, with the remaining 20 percent raised locally.
