A below average winter in terms of snow accumulation is helping the City of Swift Current's bottom line.

According to data from the Swift Current weather station, the city has only been hit with 28.5 mm of liquid equivalent precipitation since 2018 started and 22 mm of that has come in March.

Mitch Minken, general manager of infrastructure and operations with the City of Swift Current, said it has been quite a year for snow removal around the city which has been favourable for the 2018 budget.

"We're in good shape going into the fall if we don't have some major snow storms this spring," he explained.

Normally the City plans for 3-4 major snowfall events per budget and until recently hadn't really had to use the full snow removal fleet this winter.

"With the two heavy snowfalls that we had, I would consider that maybe one full event that we worked on," Minken said.

The lack of snow in 2017 resulted in a similar scenario with the City not having to use the full budget.

"Any of the removal budget that wasn't allocated would be allocated to other items to be used," he said.

A couple of snowfalls earlier this month caused the City to deploy its full fleet for five days, something that hadn't really been done up until that point this year.
