It's Emergency Preparedness Week in Swift Current after a proclamation tonight at city council.

The week runs from May 6 to May 12 in Swift Current and also coincide with North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH).

Swift Current EMO Coordinator Ed Fonger said the City makes sure its workers are thoroughly trained to try and prevent workplace injuries or illnesses.

"At the City of Swift Current we've worked hard consistently to improve our level of safety over the past few years," he explained. "We establish the safe work procedures and have taken time to recognize the hazards on the job and strive to eliminate hazards before starting any tasks or job."

Director of Emergency Planning for the City of Swift Current Denis Pilon was also in attendance for the proclamation and said the week is a great time to help people prepare for a crisis.

"Emergency preparedness week is an opportunity to encourage Canadians to take concrete actions to be prepared to protect themselves and families during emergencies," he said.

Pilon added that people should be prepared to take care of themselves for 72 hours in the event of an emergency.

This year's theme is 'be emergency ready'.
