Eighth Avenue Northwest in Swift Current was home to an electrifying event on Saturday.

The National Drive Electric Week is a Canada-wide event, with one of its venues being hosted at Superior Tech in Swift Current.

Plenty of drivers showed up for the event, bringing out their families and their electric vehicles.

Included in the battery-backed fleet were Tesla's, Hyundai's, Ford's and even one Porche. Altogether, more than a dozen EVs were present at the event, with more arriving as it continued.

The man behind the wires for this year's event was Lloyd Fehr, who set up the meeting for local enthusiasts, as well as everyone who came in from out of town.

"It's so good to see so many new EV owners," said Fehr. "Last time when we did this, I think we had six vehicles in total. Now we have just about a dozen vehicles that have shown up."

Some of the more popular vehicular machines on the scene were the Tesla’s, which have been dominating the EV field for years now as the main brand in the field. They feature a sleek design with a powerful quad electric motor set up, delivering plenty of power to each wheel, and autonomous driving systems that are the envy of every other car company pursuing that technology.

Certainly not to be ignored were the new Ford F-150 Lightnings. Certainly the biggest toys on the lot, the full-sized pickup trucks are the first of a new generation of working class EVs to see wide-scale production, only having to face Rivian trucks for competition. These F-150 Lightings were striking, with their sleek modern designs and their fantastic array of modern features. Perhaps the novel use of these features was Fehr using his own F-150 Lightning's front compartment as a space to store and plug in his microwave.

Fehr himself owns more than one electric vehicle, with his 2016 Tesla Model S, his 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, and perhaps the most unique car in the show, his 1985 Porsche 944 Turbo that he converted to electric a decade ago.

"I call that my gateway drug to electrification," laughed Fehr. " It's been converted to electric and it's my summer toy."

While certainly unique, the Porsche isn't even his strangest electric vehicle, although it may be his flashiest. Fehr also was lucky enough to run across a 1973 General Electric I-5 lawnmower. The mower is an electric mower that was itself originally battery-powered with an electric motor.

Fehr was made aware that a farmer in the area had the mower just resting in his yard. After a quick inspection, Fehr purchased it on the spot and brought it home to begin restoring it. Luckily, the mower still had all the diagrams for the wiring. With those, Fehr not only cleaned up and restored the parts, but got it back in working order as well.

This event ended up being a great opportunity not just for fellow EV owners to meet up and discuss the benefits they enjoy with their rides, but also a great chance for anyone curious about this new age technology taking over the highways at lighting fast speeds. Folks were welcome to come out, ask questions, and poke around the vehicles with the owner's permission. A great chance for the car enthusiast and the car curious.
