Ryan Murray had 3 assists last night as Everett beat the Swift Current Broncos 3-1 on Wednesday night.
The Broncos struggled right out of the gate as they gave up a shorthanded goal to Joshua Winquist only 2:32 into the first period. Bauml later hit a post midway through the period and eventually extended Everett's lead to 2-0 at the end of the first.
Full Game HighlightsSwift Current came to life midway through the second period as Chance Lund batted home a puck after Adam Lowry threw it on goal from a bad angle. That was all the offence the Broncos could muster as they fired 29 shots on goal, but didn't generate many high quality scoring chances.
"I think there were a lot of guys that didn't play very well," said Broncos Assistant Coach Jamie Heward. "I thought our D wasn't very good for most of the game. We had a couple of guys that played OK, but OK isn't good enough. If you want to take that next step to become an upper echelon team and be consistent in this league you've got to have efforts every single night that our quality. We had a lot of guys that didn't."
Eetu Laurikainen made 27 saves on 29 Everett shots before Bauml scored his second of the night into the empty net to secure the victory. The win moved Everett's record to 3-7-0-1, while the loss dropped Swift Current to 4-3-3-1.
Lowry and Coda Gordon assistant on Lund's goal and have now been in on each of the last 6 Swift Current goals. Heward knows they need more offence from the rest of their group.
Full Coaches Show"We've got to find a way to get two or three or four more guys involved in the game instead of one or two," Heward said. "You can't rely on your top line to be good every single night and get it done for you. We've got to find a way to get a guy like Adam Lowry some help."
Swift Current went 0 for 3 on the power play and didn't have to kill a single penalty. Everett is now 2-2 on their East Division road swing. Heward felt their defencemen were hesitant with the puck.
"If you don't move the puck within half a second of getting it the window of opportunity is closed," Heward noted. "I called the D over and said guys why are we being so tentative with the puck, why are we not making decisions early, why are we not going with our first read and sticking with it? There's a million things that can happen when you hesitate... now everybody is out of position."
Justin Spagrud was back in the lineup for the Broncos tonight as they shuffled lines throughout the game to try and spark a struggling offence. Swift Current continues to carry 12 forwards after Dakota Odgers returned to Yorkton of the Midget AAA league.
Elsewhere in the WHL, Kamloops beat Edmonton 5-4 in the shoot out, Lethbridge dominated Brandon 6-1 and Saskatoon topped Tri-City 3-2 in overtime.
The Broncos host Saskatoon Friday and Tri-City on Saturday. It's a stretch of three games in three nights that concludes in Prince Albert on Sunday.
"This one was a stinker," said Heward. "Come out the next game, make sure we're working twice as hard and right the ship."
