Hunters kill 4000 kg (8800lbs) male elephant seal on South Georgia in the South Atlantic; the animal is 6.8 metres long.

Vincent Massey sworn in as first Canadian-born Governor General. He is the former President of the Massey-Harris Company 1921-25.

The first-ever color television sets are offered for sale to the general public

1983
Record 125 million US TV viewers watch as final TV episode of M*A*S*H airs on CBS.

1984
Pierre Elliott Trudeau goes for a walk in an Ottawa blizzard and decides to resign; announces decision the following day; Canada's 15th Prime Minister.

1988
CALARY - Closing of the 15th Winter Olympic Games. Canada won two Silver Medals, in Singles Figure Skating as well as Bronze in Ice Dancing, Womens Downhill and Womens Super G.

1991
The first Gulf War ends.

1993
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents raid the Branch Davidian church in Waco, Texas with a warrant to arrest the group's leader David Koresh. Four BATF agents and five Davidians die in the initial raid, starting a 51-day standoff.

1996
Princess Diana agrees to divorce her estranged husband, Prince Charles, calling it the saddest day of her life.

Nationl news headlines this morning: He was repeatedly rejected by military recruiters and got into uniform at 16 after lying about his age. But Frank Buckles would later become the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I.
Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died of natural causes Sunday at his home in Charles Town.
He was 110.
The last known Canadian veteran of the war, John Babcock of Spokane, Wash., died in February 2010.
There is still British survivor Claude Stanley Choules who's 110.
