For the first time in at least 15 years, the NDP has multiple nominees trying to become the party's candidate for Swift Current constituency.

Announced yesterday by the NDP are two new faces to politics, Shaun Hanna and Stefan Rumpel, both vying for NDP nomination for the imminent Swift Current byelection.

Both nominees said they since the news broke that they were seeking the nomination 'it's been a bit surreal,' with each stating for the first time in awhile the NDP has a chance to make some noise in the Swift Current constituency.

"Because it's a byelection we also have to remember that Swift Current will very much set the tone in 2020," Hanna said. "The issues that are brought up in this byelection and the platforms that are run on both sides will set the tone provincially for what the outcome is. Once again we're positioning Swift Current to be leaders in the province, so that's pretty exciting."

Rumpel threw his name into the ring for a few reasons that stand out to him, with one being changing the way politics is perceived throughout society.

"I find people right now can be a little negative and divisive over politics," he said. "One of the reasons I decided to jump in is because I'd like to try and bridge some of those gaps, I'd like some more positive energy in it."

Neither of the nominees has a political background, but each sit on various boards and committees, something Hanna believes has some similarities to being an MLA.

"For myself, I've sat on numerous boards and run businesses, and have to make those tough decisions all the time," he said. "I understand what those tough decisions are like and when they impact people, what that fallout might be. In terms of provincial politics, it's just on a much larger scale."

As for Rumpel, he believes strengthening the economy can be done by setting up younger families and professionals with excellent education, while making sure they aren't overpaying for taxation, such as PST or property taxes.

"Specifically focusing on the items that contribute to economic prosperity," he said. "Sometimes there is too much of a vision on the money, whereas the truth of the matter is, people, drive an economy."

The NDP will be holding their nomination meeting on January 28 at 12:30 p.m. at the Modern Family Restaurant.
