1922
A man who had claimed to be an investigator for the Saskatchewan Liquor Commission was tarred and feathered by an angry mob in Prince Albert, Sask. Several residents of the community had been charged with various liquor offences on information provided to the police by this individual. After the incident, it turned out that he was simply a member of the community using this means to retaliate against people with whom he had a dispute.

Alberta Premier Ernest Manning officially opened Calgary's Husky Tower. The Tower reaches 182 metres (626 feet) into the air, and weighs 10,884 tonnes. It takes 63 seconds for the elevators to reach the top, and much longer to get there by climbing the staircase of 811 steps

Terry Fox 1958-1981 dies at age 22; one-legged runner of Marathon of Hope loses battle to lung cancer in a Vancouver hospital; started marathon in St. John's, Newfoundland; stopped near Thunder Bay; raised $25 million to fight cancer; Flags across Canada lowered to half mast in his honour.
His mother, Betty, passed away last week at the age of 73.
More than $550 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research through the annual Terry Fox Run

National news: ....A treasure trove of hundreds of new species may have been discovered in the Philippines, including a bizarre sea star that feeds exclusively on sunken driftwood and a deep-sea, shrimp-eating shark that swells up to scare off other predators.

Scientists braved leeches and a host of venomous creatures from the mountains to the sea to uncover more than 300 species that are likely new to science.
