1887
In a snowstorm at Fort Keogh, Montana, the world's largest snowflakes are reported, 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) thick.

1896
The first person to be convicted of speeding. He is fined 1 shilling, plus costs, for speeding at 8 mph (13 km/h), thus exceeding the contemporary speed limit of 2 mph (3.2 km/h).

1958
The Lego company patents the design of its Lego bricks, still compatible with bricks produced today.

1965
The current design of the Flag of Canada is chosen by an act of Parliament.

1976
Saskatchewan authorizes provincial takeover of potash mines.

1977
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau declares he will quit politics if Quebec votes for separation in a referendum.

1986
Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrates 74 seconds into its flight, killing teacher Christa McAuliffe and the rest of the crew. Their capsule plunged intact into the ocean, pulverizing everyone on impact.

Following yesterday's blizzard, Southwest Saskatchewan will continue to feel the effects of winter.
Meteorologist with Environment Canada, Bob Cormier says an extreme windchill warning has been issued.  He says despite a low windspeed, the windchill will reach into the -40 range.  

News headlines this morning:  The Egyptian capital Cairo was the scene of violent chaos Friday, when tens of thousands of anti-government protesters stoned and confronted police, who fired back with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. It was a major escalation in what was already the biggest challenge to authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak's 30 year-rule.
