What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2, can you fix Type 1 diabetes by eating better or exercising more?
Type 1 (insulin-dependent or juvenile)
Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) can occur at any age, but most commonly is diagnosed from infancy to the late 30s. In this type of diabetes, a person’s pancreas produces little or no insulin. Although the causes are not entirely known, scientists believe the body’s own defense system (the immune system) attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes must inject insulin several times every day.

Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset)
Type 2 diabetes typically develops after age 40, but can appear earlier, and has more recently begun to appear with more frequency in children. In this form of diabetes the pancreas still produces insulin, but the body does not produce enough or is not able to use it effectively. Treatment includes diet control, exercise, self-monitoring of blood glucose and, in some cases, oral drugs or insulin.

What is it like living with Type 1 :  Denis and Chastan ....
Who are the SW Type 1 Sharps:  A  group of parents, families and people with diabetes that have joined together in Southwest Saskatchewan to provide awareness and support for people living with Type 1 diabetes.  Our focus this year has been the Walk to Cure Diabetes, but we'd like to be a group that offers awareness and education and support to those living with diabetes and for newly diagnosed individuals.    Join their group on Facebook! The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

What is the Walk to Cure Diabetes?
The annual TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes unites communities across Canada to help find a cure for diabetes. The TELUS Walk is a fun way for families, friends and the corporate community to get involved and help make a difference in the lives of over 300,000 Canadians living with type 1 diabetes. Last year, the 2009 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes brought together over 45,000 Canadians and raised over $7.5 million!

This is Swift Current's first Walk to Cure Diabetes, and we’ve seen some tremendous support so far, and would like to make it an annual tradition!
