The proposed route of the Keystone XL Pipeline
The United States wants TransCanada to explore re-routing its proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
The State Department says that it needs to do an in-depth assessment of potential alternative routes in Nebraska. A press released issued Thursday says the review could be completed as early as the first quarter of 2013, several months after next November's presidential election.
The seven-billion-dollar project would carry millions of barrels of Alberta oilsands crude a week through six US states to Gulf Coast refineries. Its current proposed route goes across an area of Nebraska where an aquifer that is a crucial source of drinking water to millions on the Great Plains is located.
The pipeline is also expected to cut through Saskatchewan, and run a few kilometres away from Shaunavon.
