In the ten weeks leading up to Remembrance Day, residents in Swift Current are sharing the stories of their loved ones and relatives who were killed in action or survived with unfathomable scars.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 is running the Veteran of the Week Program for the third year, acknowledging war veterans with ties to the province.

Public Relations Officer for Branch 56, John Griffin, was happy to see people submitting personal connections to the program this year.

“It's to recognize and honour those who have served our country,” he said. “It's important that we recognize these individuals for all that they do for Canada.”

Submissions can simply include information about the veteran, in which case Branch 56 will write a short biography and history of the individual. However, anyone submitting is also welcome to include their own write up for the veteran.

Criteria to be considered are simply to have ties to Saskatchewan; the veteran can be from any branch of service across the country.

The previous two editions of the program ran for five weeks longer than this year will, but Griffin assured that anyone who submits and does not make it in for the 2023 Veteran’s Week will be first-come next year.

Keepsake certificates with the biographies and week dedications are being made for all ten former members of the Canadian Armed Forces, for the individual who submitted them to the program. To send in a veteran, email Griffin at rclbranch56sc@gmail.com.
