As the seasons change in Swift Current, so do the pools, allowing for much-needed work to be completed on the Aquatic Centre roof.

Melissa Shaw, the general manager of cultural and aquatic services, explained that although some work was done previously, more work is now required.

“The roof has been failing, unfortunately, for a number of years,” she stated. “We had done some work a couple of years ago, but that work didn't last, so, unfortunately, we had to move into a full roof replacement.”

With the last day of the indoor season approaching on June 15, Shaw added that they are currently removing the existing roofing system and reinstalling vapour barriers, insulation, and new decking as well as installing a new rubber membrane on the surface.

The Aquatic Center was built in the early 1980s, which plays a large role in the deterioration of the building.

“Roofs deteriorate over time, and this is no different,” Shaw elaborated. “We had done a roofing spray membrane, numerous years ago now, and unfortunately it just didn't hold and didn't do well with the climate. It had some cracking and some very serious deteriorations that were identified by a roofing company that was brought in to do an analysis of it and they determined that our best course of action to maintain the envelope of the building was to replace the roof.”

Parts of the Aquatic Centre are currently blocked off for safety, however, hours of operation have not been impacted.

The repairs were budgeted for in the City’s Capitol Replacement Budget which was approved in 2022.

Duncan Roofing of Moose Jaw was selected for the job in 2022 based on their bid which totalled $621,000.

The goal is to have the work completed by mid to late August.
