One of the last pieces of business for the previous term of Swift Current City Council was the approval of the 2013 Local Improvements.

The program will see the reconstruction of sidewalks in selected areas of the city, with the costs shared by the city and the affected property owners.

Those property owners can choose to petition against the work.

"On a certain project and that's typically a block of sidewalk, if more than half of the property owners on that sidewalk feel that sidewalk replacement is not necessary, they will submit a petition to the city clerks office and once it's verified it's basically a petition that will work out," said Engineering Director Mac Forster. "This year I believe there is over two kilometers of sidewalk initiated," added Forster. "But it is typical for almost 50% of those to be petitioned against, leaving us with about 1.2 kilometers on average of sidewalk to be reconstructed."

The affected property owners will be notified of the work by mail, and will receive instructions on how to submit a petition if they so choose.
