Local welding students at Great Plains College in Swift Current, will be using their talents to raise money in the New Year as part of the fourth annual Carharrts and Caviar Welding Showcase and Auction.

The auction began as a way to raise funds for purchases and scholarships within the welding program, however according to welding instructor Jared McKenzie the showcase has become about much more.

"It goes way beyond just raising money for the students. It gives them real life experience on fabricating some stuff. People don't usually think of art and welding but the two actually go quite well hand in hand."

The student made metal art pieces to be auctioned off will be revealed in the New Year.

McKenzie adds that the welding program is always full each year and attracts people from across the country.

"I've had guys from Peterborough, this year I have a kid from Vancouver, Winnipeg. Were actually starting to draw from a very vast range. It's not just local kids to a local school here. People are actually traveling to come here and be a part of this program."

The popularity of the program is also good for the country's job market as McKenzie says there is currently a huge shortage of skilled tradesmen in Canada.

The event is scheduled to take place on February 25th and tickets are available for purchase now at Great Plains College.
