A man from Maple Creek pled guilty to manslaughter last week in Swift Current Provincial Court.

It was over one year ago on October 7 that Ronald Plummer attacked his wife, then caused a crash that claimed the life of a corrections officer from the Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge.

Plummer was originally charged with second-degree murder but pled guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. He also admitted to aggravated assault in relation to attacking his wife.

The 57-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with less remand credit. Plummer will serve 8 years and 300 plus days in jail.

On October 7, Plummer had choked his wife. She was found semi-conscious and in a non-responsive state in the couple's home.

After the assault, Plummer drove off north of Maple Creek in a Ford Escape at 149 kilometers an hour when he served into the oncoming lane and hit the southbound vehicle driven by Lesa Zoerb, a mother of two from Maple Creek killing Zoerb and severely injuring himself, to where he was airlifted to hospital.

Police discovered that there was no evidence of braking by Plummer and that he has veered sharply into Zoerb's path causing the collision.

A number of victim impact statements were filed by Zoerb's family and friends, that talked about the impact that Zoerb had on their lives.
