Graduating Swift Current Broncos defenceman Sam McGinley has committed to play post-secondary hockey with the defending U Sports champion UNB Reds out of Fredericton, New Brunswick. 

McGinley came to the Broncos in a trade with the Regina Pats in 2019-2020 and has scored 20 goals and 76 points in 184 games in Swift Current, scoring a career-high 37 points in 61 games with the Broncos last season.

Jones commits to Lakeland College ahead of Wildcats' season

Innovation Credit Union Wildcats defenceman Amiyah Jones will be attending school and playing hockey at Lakeland College next year. Jones scored four goals and 14 points in 74 SFU18AAA games and is set to return to the Wildcats for her third and final season. 

The Wildcats begin the regular season on September 27 when they host the Regina Rebels.

Matthews signs historic contract extension with Leafs

Auston Matthews will stay in Toronto after signing a four-year, $53 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs on Wednesday with an average annual value of $13.5 million, which will make him the NHL's highest-paid player when the contract begins in the 2024-25 season.

The 2022 Hart Trophy winner scored 299 goals in 481 regular season games with the Leafs. The extension will keep Matthews in Toronto until the 2028-29 season when he turns 31 years of age.

Jays blanked by Orioles, but lose no ground in wild card race

Anthony Santander homered twice as the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 on Wednesday night at Camden Yards. The Jays remain a game back of the final wild card spot in the American League after the Seattle Mariners fell 5-4 to the Chicago White Sox in extra innings.

Jose Berrios will start for the Jays in the rubber match of the three-game set tonight.

Collaros, Fajardo set to return as Bombers host Als

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Montreal Alouettes will both see their starting quarterbacks return from injury as the two teams kick off week 12 in the CFL tonight at IG Field.

Zach Collaros will return under centre for the Bombers after suffering a neck injury in the Bombers' win over the Elks in Week 10. Dru Brown filled in for the rest of the game in Edmonton and the Bombers' 19-18 win over Calgary last week.

Cody Fajardo will make his return for the Alouettes after he also missed two weeks with a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 9 against Hamilton. Caleb Evans started for the Als in wins over the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Ottawa Redblacks.

The Riders are on a bye week and will face the Bombers in the Labour Day Classic next Sunday.
