The AAA 18U baseball season might not have ended the way Swift Current's Ethan Murdoch envisioned it, but he was rewarded last week for his spectacular individual campaign.

On Friday, the 57's centre fielder and catcher picked up the Charlie Meacher League MVP and the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League's (SPBL) Top Hitter Honours too.

"It was kind of bittersweet," he said. "Obviously it was really exciting to get recognized individually but getting to the provincials and seeing all the other teams there competing was kind of hard to see because I wish we were there as a team. Like I said it was good to have my work recognized, especially because it's voted on by the coaches, the MVP award, so knowing that the coaches around the league felt that I was a pretty impactful player was obviously good to hear."

It was the second year in a row he was crowned with the league's Top Hitter award but first time claiming the MVP.

"I don't think I did much different from years past but obviously being that year older, the third year really helps," he said. "You get a bit more of an advantage as you grow and obviously got a little stronger, had another year to play, so I had a bit more of a chance to make an impact on the league."

In 32 games this past season, Murdoch led the 57's in practically every offensive category with 44 hits, three home runs, 34 RBIs, 30 runs scored while hitting .449 with an on-base of .546.

He was third in the league in batting average and first in both OPS (on-base+slugging percentage) and slugging percentage.

Next week he'll be off to McCook Community College in Nebraska to take the next step in his baseball career.

"Even since we stopped (playing), just been going to the field almost every day and staying in the gym, I feel like I'm pretty physically ready," he said. "The 32 game season was good because it was 32 games in a month less than what the normal SPBL season is but it was also good for me because, at college, the games are going to be packed in on weekdays and weekends."
