Today marks the first celebration of Saskatchewan's new provincial holiday.

"Family Day" was introduced in the 2006 Throne Speech and received Royal Assent in December.

Saskatchewan now has more public holidays than any other province in the country. One of the critics of "Family Day" is the Canadian Federation of Independent Business who believe many small business owners will now be forced to work longer hours to compensate for lost revenue and production, and increased labour costs.

The new holiday is intended to create better work-family balance, but the Canadian Federation of Independent Business is less optimistic. 42% of small business owners surveyed believe "Family Day" will result in lost sales and revenue, while 34% say they will have to operate longer hours to compensate.
