The Saskatchewan RCMP have introduced a new online crime reporting system across the whole province.

“Since February 8, 2021 we have been piloting Online Crime Reporting in the communities of Swift Current, Yorkton, Kindersley, Melfort, Humboldt and Spiritwood,” said Supt. Maureen Wilkie, Assistant Criminal Operations Officer for the Saskatchewan RCMP in a written release Friday. “We are excited to launch this new tool Saskatchewan-wide in RCMP jurisdiction to provide the public with a new way of reporting crime to our detachments.”

The tool will allow for crimes such as damage or mischief to property under $5,000, theft of a bicycle, theft under $5,000, theft from a vehicle under $5,000, lost or found property, or damage or mischief to a vehicle under $5,000 to be reported.

In the release, it was noted that the incidents must also satisfy a number of conditions to be reported online. These include no witnesses or suspects, items stolen or lost must cost less than $5,000, damage caused by vandalism must cost less than $5,000 to repair, and there are no items involving personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals.

The tool is hoped to allow for more crimes to be reported, which the RCMP state can be used to provide a clearer picture of the type and number of crimes happening in a specific area. This information can then, in turn, be used to help with future police projects and initiatives, and the statistics can be used as a component when determining officer deployment in detachments and units.

The new online crime reporting tool can be found on the RCMP website.
