The weather and seasons can definitely effect someone's mood. When its sunny, your spirits are lifted and when its cold and gloomy, you may be feeling the Winter Blues.

"For most of us I think we certainly look forward to spring but for some people, winter particularly, affects their ability to cope," said Cypress Health Region's Supervisor of Adult Mental Health, Ralph Aman.

With the Winter Blues you might find yourself over sleeping, eating more carbohydrates, lack of energy, withdrawal from activities and feeling sad or irritable.

"It can really affect daily living whether it be trying to get to school or trying to work or even enjoy time with their family. Sometimes people don't realize when they see something happening, when they are not doing very well but don't really understand," said Aman.

The first step to overcoming the Winter Blues is contacting your local doctor. Your doctor should be able to discuss possibilities that might help. Another option is to get in contact with Mental Health at 778-520. There are also a few things you can do on your own:

-Start a regular exercise program.
-Get an adequate amount of sleep.
-Eat a well balanced diet following the Canada Food Guide. and;
-Avoid excess alcohol and illicit drugs.
