There will be a slow down in traffic starting on Monday and extending into the fall season just east of Swift Current on the Trans-Canada Highway as the result of some construction work.

The project will see both the eastbound and westbound Trans-Canada Highway overpasses of the CP Rail reconstructed in the coming months to the toon of $18 million with work on the eastbound side being done first.

David Horth, director of communications with the ministry highways, said there are a few reasons the provincial government wanted to upgrade the overpasses ranging from its age to it being an extremely busy highway in Saskatchewan.

"This is an important project for Highway One," he said. "We're going to upgrade these two bridges over the CP Rail tracks that are in need of upgrading. One is going to almost be a complete rebuild and the other one is going to be a pretty substantial rehab."

According to Ministry of Highway documents, the eastbound overpass is the elder of the two at sitting at nearly 70 years old.

"That's the one that's getting the complete rebuild," he said. "The westbound was built when the highway was twinned so it's a bit newer so refurbishment is acceptable for that one. The other one we have to sort of work a bit on the alignment so the eastbound structure is going to get a complete rebuild."

With the project pegged at $18 million, the government is hopeful it may help the Swift Current area a bit economically as well.

"We absolutely hope that would generate some economic activity in the community," he said. "That's not the reason we do it, but we're certainly grateful or pleased if that also occurs."

Given that construction will be carried out on just one overpass at a time, traffic will be re-routed to crossover on the other bridge to maintain the two-way traffic flow. The Ministry of Highways also noted they'll be monitoring the traffic regularly and make changes if any issues arise.
