Canadian Blood Services are always looking for blood donors.

When donating blood, it is imperative that one know their blood type which many are unsure of or do not know.

Tammy Mason, Lab Manager for Cypress Regional Hospital, says those who wish to know their blood type should visit their physician.

"If you need to know what blood type you are and you don't know, you need to see your physician, who will order a group and type. Then you come to the lab here with your requisition and we will find out. As to the results, you would need to call your physician's clinic after that."

Mason says O-negative blood is the most in-demand.

"The most common is O-positive, what they are often looking for is the group O- negative. O- negative is typically known as a universal donor. So if we have a patient come in and he or she
is in a trauma situation and we don't have time to group them, we typically will give them group O- negative just to tide them over until we can actually group and type them in the lab."

Those wishing to donate can call the Canadian Blood Services at 1-888-2-DONATE, or visit their website: https://www.blood.ca/.
