A note or letter might have been a key in getting convicted pedophile Peter Whitmore to give himself up Tuesday night.

RCMP had been talking with him all night when they apparently gave him a note that said they would "recommend" to the courts that they not seek a dangerous offender application for him.  Dangerous offender status keeps people in jail indefinitely.

Justice Minister Frank Quennell doesn't believe, however, that the letter holds much weight.

Whitmore has been charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement and the sexual assault of two children, ages 14 and 10.
