The unexpected death of a young male yesterday just hours after being released by the Morse RCMP is being investigated by the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes.

The 23-year-old from Edmonton was pulled over yesterday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. near Morse. Police located a small number of unknown pills during a search of the vehicle and arrested the male for possession of a controlled substance.

About an hour later the Morse RCMP released the male from custody without charges.

Around 5:45 p.m. the same male required medical treatment by EMS and he was taken to the hospital where he died several hours later.

The Major Crimes unit will investigate the death of the male due to his interaction with the RCMP and the presence of the unknown substance seized. The Saskatchewan Coroners Service will also join the investigation and perform an autopsy.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice and Attorney General has been asked by the Saskatchewan RCMP to appoint an independent observer as per the Saskatchewan Police Act.
