For the first time in 21 years, the Stanley Cup is going back to the Mile High City.

The Colorado Avalanche beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in game six of the final on Sunday to capture their third Stanley Cup and first since 2001, while ending the Lightning's bid for a third-straight title.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist and Arturri Lehkonen also scored for the Avalanche, who lost just four of their 20 games in the playoffs. Defenseman Cale Makar had eight goals and 29 points in those 20 games to earn the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Joe Sakic, a fan favourite with the Swift Current Broncos from 1986-1988 and a two-time Stanley Cup winner as Colorado's captain, is getting his name on the cup for a third time as the Avalanche's General Manager.
