Sask Landing 2014

A proposal to give Saskatchewan residents first crack at reserving provincial park campsites has been overwhelmingly rejected.

Visitors to the parks were asked in the fall through an online survey if they supported the idea of allowing Saskatchewan residents to reserve campsites in advance of people from other provinces or countries.

"We had about 75,000 people that are on our e-news letter for the parks, so we sent out an email to all of them asking their opinion," said Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty. "We got a little over 2200 responses back, and out of those responses, the majority of people wanted to leave it as it was without a neccessary 'Saskatchewan First' response."

Docherty says there were a couple reasons why the approach was not favoured by those who responded to the survey.

"Some of the comments that we received in relation to that were we have an awful lot of people who are ex pats that moved out of the province but grew up in Saskatchewan and grew up utilizing the parks here, so they want to come back to Saskatchewan and utilize the parks... The other was families getting together for the holidays and we had people from out of province," he added.

Campers will be able to start making reservations for campsites at Saskatchewan's Provincial Parks on March 2nd, 2015, with reservations for certain parks opening up over a ten-day period.

Also, today is the deadline for campers to submit applications for seasonal campsites. The draw to award the campsites will be made on Monday.
