Saskatchewan consumers will be paying more for electricity in the new year.

The Saskatchewan Rate and Review panel ruled on SaskPower's rate application, and approved an increase in electrical rates in order to help replace old infrastructure and fund future expansion projects.

While the City of Swift Current recieves City Light and Power Bills rather than SaskPower bills, all customers were treated the same in the increase.

"Every electrical customer in Saskatchewan basically pays the same rates," said Director of City of Swift Current Light and Power, Mitch Minken, "whether you get your power from SaskPower or City of Swift Current Light and Power, everybody will see the same 4.9% increase that was approved." Minken added the last rate increase was in August of 2010, and believed it to be a larger increase.

The new rates will automatically show up on your power bill and take effect January 1st, 2013.
