This year, Swift Current's Halloween was a busy one for a branch of the city's RCMP.

From the period of four p.m. until ten p.m., the unit focused on residential areas hoping to help keep trick or treaters safe.

During their time patrolling the areas, 20 tickets were given out in the six-hour period by just two members of Swift Current's Traffic Services unit.

Twelve speed violations and three failure to stop tickets made up the majority of the infractions.

Corporal Mike Young, the Traffic Services team leader with the Swift Current City RCMP, said the numbers were slightly elevated compared to a typical evening.

"Motorists weren't quite paying attention. I don't know if it was that they were a little distracted with the little ones that were running around, or they just weren't paying attention to the speed zones."

This Halloween was about on par with past enforcement, according to Young.

He said that most of the speed violations came in school zones. Speed limits on school zones were recently lowered to 30 kilometres an hour by Swift Current City Council.

"At this point in time, we're two months into the changes that have occurred through the community, and people just need to be paying a little bit more attention to those playground and school zone signs," Young said.

He added that he hoped the expensive reminder to motorists would help ensure children in Swift Current stay safe on the city's roads.

The lowered school zone limits are in effect from eight a.m. to eight p.m. every day.
