Swift Current residents may be making their way to the Labour Day Classic, or out for a camping excursion on the long weekend, but SGI is reminding you to take care out there.

The Crown corporation is reminding drivers on the roads this weekend that their chance of an accident doubles on the long weekend.

Hoping to cut down on that statistic, they are sharing how to stay safe on the roads this holiday.

Scott McGregor, a communications consultant with SGI, that while the riders would make easy work of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, roads will be presenting more of an obstacle for football fans.

"As with all long weekends, there's going to be a lot more traffic along Saskatchewan roads, especially when you're taking roads in and out of Regina, you're going to have a lot of football fans coming into Regina to watch the Riders step all over the Blue Bombers."

Obeying speed limits, not driving distracted, not driving tired, and making sure to drive sober were all things McGregor wanted to remind motorists of before they depart for the weekend.

He also said that Highway Hotline was a useful resource for drivers to check for delays and construction along the way.

"As there still is no snow on the ground, thankfully, orange zones and work zones are still very much active throughout the province. When you're driving through a work zone, make sure to slow down, obey the posted speed limit, and give workers enough space to do their job safely."

Generally, there are increased police presences in the province during long weekends, which McGregor said would ring true for this long weekend as well.

"Police officers just want everyone to be safe, and to get where they're going safely."

The Labour Day Classic gets underway at 1:00 p.m. where many fans will be hoping for McGregor's prediction to come true.
