Last week Swift Current saw record-breaking heat which also lead to some breaks in the local sidewalks.

The record-breaking temperature for June 3rd was set at 34 degrees and last week saw a high of 38.5 degrees on that day.

A number of sidewalks within the city popped up due to the heat as Manager of Engineering for the city Jolene Peters explains.

"Concrete buckling does happen from time to time. The most common cause of buckling is warm temperatures. When the concrete heats, it expands and the upward thermal pressure can create buckles and weak spots."

Peters adds that it is rare to see three occurrences of this within a week as we did last week, as usually they only see one or two a year.

The damage occurred on three sidewalks within the city. Two on the northwest side and one on the south side.

Peters details the plans for repairs.

"The areas have been marked with construction cones. The concrete contractor has put in a request for locates and the spots will be repaired shortly after the locates are completed."
