Statistics Canada releasing the results of a new study on the nature and extend of family violence.

Using a 10-year file, the study examined police-reported data from 1995 to 2004. One of the more alarming statistics indicated that, although spousal abuse involves multiple incidents, most violence is reported to police on only a single occasion.

Laurel Buck, the Assistant Director of the Violence Intervention Program, encourages the victims of abusive relationships to seek help immediately.

The Violence Intervention Program provides counseling services as well as a 24-hour support line at 1-800-214-7083.

Complete results of the study were published in the 2006 edition of "Family Violence in Canada: A Statistical Profile" and are available at www.statcan.ca
