A local southwestern Saskatchewan fire chief will be recognized with an award for his long standing service next week.

Gull Lake Fire Chief Bentley Gibson will be honoured with the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal for his exemplary service in the public service sector.

"Chief Gibson has done a great job managing his department," Gull Lake Mayor Blake Campbell said. "He's always made sure his men are very well trained, he really puts a lot of himself into the fire department, he's a very dedicated individual, he has always made sure we've had top of the line equipment, and he's always poured his heart out into it, so I think he's very well deserving of the award."

The award was established in 2003 and recognizes individuals working in a direct capacity to protect people and/or property, and supervisory personnel in the public service sectors who ensure the safety, security and protection of Saskatchewan citizens.

Campbell, who has also received the prestigious award in 2015 for his EMS work, believes this shines a bright light on Gull Lake's first responders team.

"I think it's great to have people like Bentley to be recognized for things like this who have been there for many years contributing to the community and helping others," he said. "The award is for protecting lives and property and certainly he has had many opportunities over the last 35 years to do that."

Gibson has been the fire chief in Gull Lake for 27 years and played an instrumental part in fighting the Clarendon Hotel blaze on October 9, 2016.

"He handled that fire very well," Campbell said. "I personally have worked with Chief Gibson, as I was in EMS for 30 years, and in that time I had many opportunities to work with him. He was always very professional and handle's himself very well on scenes."

Gibson is slated to receive his award on September 12 at the Government House in Regina.
