Broncos welcome Oil Kings for back-to-back set

The Swift Current Broncos will look to get back into the win column when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings for a pair of games this weekend. 

The Broncos come in on a two-game losing streak after falling 5-4 and 6-0 to the Moose Jaw Warriors last weekend. The defending WHL Champion Oil Kings are coming off a 6-1 loss in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, but they won two games in a row before that. 

The games from InnovationPlex tonight and tomorrow can be heard on the Eagle 94.1 FM with Living Sky Casino Broncos Hockey starting at 6:30pm. 

Meanwhile, Connor Bedard will play against his hometown team for the first time when the Regina Pats visit the Vancouver Giants. The game at Langley Events Centre has been sold out for over a month in anticipation of the North Vancouver product and projected first-overall pick in next year's NHL Draft.

In other WHL action, Moose Jaw visits Kamloops, Saskatoon hosts Winnipeg and Medicine Hat travels to Red Deer.

Legionnaires and Wildcats in action this weekend

The Home Hardware have a busy stretch of three games in three days this weekend as they visit the Warman Wildcats tonight and the Tisdale Trojans tomorrow and Sunday.

The Innovation Credit Union Wildcats play their only game of the weekend against the Battlefords Sharks tomorrow at 5:00pm from the AGT Centre in Rosetown.

The Source for Sports U18 AA Broncos make a weekend trip to the Parkland with games in Melville and Yorkton this weekend, while the SWT U13 Broncos host the Regina Tigers on Sunday at S3 East Arena.

The Full Line Ag U18 AA Wildcats host the Western Prairie Fire Sunday at 1:45pm from InnovationPlex, while the Graphic Edge U15 Wildcats are at S3 East taking on the Warman Wildcats at 2:45pm that afternoon. The WW Smith U13 Wildcats visit the Western Prairie Fire tonight in Kindersley and tomorrow in Rosetown.

Ardens competing in Volleyball Provincials

The Comp High School Ardens will look to make it a provincial volleyball sweep for Swift Current. They’ll compete at 5A Girls’ provincials in Balgonie today and tomorrow after the Colts captured the boys’ championship last weekend at the Comp. 

Boys’ volleyball teams from Frontier, Fox Valley, Beechy and Kincaid are also competing in 1A provincials in Beechy and Lucky Lake this weekend.

Vavra, Voll looking to win Vanier Cup with Huskies

Former southwest High School football standouts Rhett Vavra and Nixen Voll will join the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in their quest for a fourth Vanier Cup on Saturday when they face the Laval Rouge et Or.

The Huskies are in the U Sports football title for the second-straight year and 11th time overall. Two of those matchups were against Laval... a 7-1 loss in 2004, and a 13-8 defeat at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon in 2006.

Kick-off is at 12:00 noon from London, Ontario.

Leafs' legend Salming passes away

Toronto Maple Leafs legend Borje Salming passed away Thursday after a brief battle with ALS. He was 71 years old. 

The Swedish-born Salming played 16 seasons with the Leafs and scored 150 goals and 787 points in a time where European players were uncommon in the NHL. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996 and was honoured by the Leafs during the Hall of Fame’s induction weekend earlier this month.

The NHL gets back going today after a day off for US Thanksgiving. Five Canadian teams are on the ice with Toronto visiting Minnesota, Calgary travelling to Washington, Montreal in Chicago and Ottawa facing the Ducks in Anaheim this afternoon. Later tonight, the Winnipeg Jets visit the Stars in Dallas.

Vikings beat Patriots to wrap up Thanksgiving football triple-header

Kirk Cousins threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns as the Minnesota Vikings edged the New England Patriots 33-26 to wrap up a US Thanksgiving tripleheader in the NFL yesterday. 

Earlier, Tyler Bass kicked a game-winning 45-yard field goal with two seconds left as Buffalo beat Detroit 28-25, and Dak Prescott threw two touchdown passes and Ezekiel Elliot rushed for another as the Cowboys beat the Giants 28-20. 

USA battles England in marquee World Cup match today

Matchround two begins at the FIFA World Cup today with England taking on the USA to wrap up a four-game slate. England rolled to a 6-2 win over Iran in their opening match, while the Americans drew Wales 1-1.

Earlier this morning, Iran scored twice in second-half stoppage time to stun Wales 2-0. The Welsh were down to ten men and their backup keeper after starting goalie Wayne Hennessey was sent off with a straight red card in the 86th minute. Host Qatar fell 3-1 to Senegal and the Netherlands faces Ecuador in the other game today. Canada plays their next game on Sunday against Croatia.
