Broncos host Pats and Rebels this weekend

The Swift Current Broncos welcome Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats to InnovationPlex for the first time this season tonight. 

The Pats beat the Broncos 4-3 last Saturday in the Queen City as Swift Current scored three unanswered goals in a rally from a 4-0 deficit that fell just short. Defenceman Adam McNutt will face his former team for the first time as he’s expected to be in the lineup after the Broncos acquired him in a trade with the Pats earlier this week. 

The face-off is at 7:00pm and you can hear the game on the Eagle 94.1 FM with Living Sky Casino Broncos Hockey starting at 6:30pm. The Broncos then host the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday night, also at 7:00pm.

Full slate of local minor hockey

The Home Hardware U18 AAA Legionnaires visit the Yorkton Maulers for a pair of games this weekend, while the Innovation Credit Union U18 AAA Wildcats welcome the Notre Dame Hounds Sunday afternoon at 1:15pm from S3 Arenas, and you can hear that game on B&A Petroleum Local Sports Live on the Eagle 94.1 FM.

The Source for Sports U18 AA Broncos host Weyburn tonight and the Regina Rangers tomorrow, the Pure Chem U15 AA Broncos host Yorkton tomorrow and the Prairie Storm on Sunday, and the SWT U13 Broncos begin their league season on the road in Regina. 

The Full Line Ag U18 AA Wildcats start their league schedule with a pair of home games against the Parkland Fire this weekend, while the Graphic Edge U15 AA Wildcats visit Prince Albert, and the U13 AA Wildcats visit the Lumsden-Bethune Lynx on Sunday.

High school football regular season wraps up

The last week of the high school football season sees Shaunavon hosting Gull Lake and Maple Creek welcoming Lumsden in 9-man action this afternoon. The Swift Current Colts host the Peacock Tornadoes in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm, and that game will also be on B & A Petroleum Local Sports Live on the Eagle 94.1 FM.

Western Showdown continues

InnovationPlex will be a busy place with not just hockey going on, but the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown continuing at the Swift Current Curling Club. 

Abby Ackland, Clancy Grandy, Raphaela Keiser, Isabella Wrana, Beth Peterson, Michelle Jaeggi, Nancy Martin and Eun ji Gim are all unbeaten in the "A" event after day one. The triple-knockout event continues today and Saturday with the playoffs on Sunday.

Flames beat defending champs for first season-opening win in 13 years

The Calgary Flames scored five unanswered goals to knock off the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche 5-3 at the Saddledome to win their season opener for the first time since 2009. Nazem Kadri had an assist for the Flames in his first game against the team he won his first cup with last season. 

In other NHL action, Auston Matthews scored the game winner early in the third period as the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied to beat Washington 3-2, and Brady Tkachuk had the lone goal for Ottawa in a 4-1 loss to Buffalo. 

The Winnipeg Jets open their season tonight when they host the New York Rangers at Canada Life Centre, while the Montreal Canadiens visit the Detroit Red Wings.

Alvarez, Astros put Mariners on the ropes

Yordan Alvarez followed up his walk-off blast in game one with the go-ahead home run in game two as the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 to take a 2-0 lead in their American League Division Series. The Astros can book a spot in the ALCS with a win in Seattle on Saturday. 

The other ALDS game between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians was postponed by rain and will be made up today. The Yankees lead the series 1-0. Later, the Phillies host the Braves, and the Padres welcome the Dodgers with both NL division series tied at a game apiece.

Riders idle as CFL starts week 19

A CFL Friday night doubleheader has Ottawa hosting Montreal just days after the RedBlacks' upset win over the Alouettes on Thanksgiving. Later, Hamilton visits Calgary with the Tiger-Cats two points behind the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the last playoff spot.

The Riders are on a bye week and play their next game against the Stampeders next Friday at Mosaic Stadium.

Meanwhile, another low-scoring Thursday night NFL game saw the Washington Commanders snap a four-game losing streak with a 12-7 win over the Chicago Bears.
