Fluker, Caswell, and Praught headed to World U17 Hockey Challenge

Two Swift Current Broncos players have been selected for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge next month in British Columbia. 

Defenceman Josh Fluker and Forward Clarke Caswell are on the roster for Team Canada Black, and Broncos Head Coach Devan Praught has been named an assistant coach for Team Canada White. 

This will be the first time this tournament has taken place since 2019, when it was held in Swift Current and Medicine Hat. The event goes from November 3-12 in Langley and Delta, BC. 

The Broncos return to action when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday at 7:00pm from InnovationPlex. You can hear the game on the Eagle 94.1 FM with Living Sky Casino Broncos Hockey.

In the WHL last night, Cole Jordan had two goals and Denton Mateychuk had a goal and two helpers as the Moose Jaw Warriors beat the Regina Pats 5-2. Connor Bedard scored for the Pats in a losing cause. He leads the league with 10 goals and 21 points in 12 games played.

On tonight's WHL schedule, Saskatoon visits Calgary, Edmonton hosts Prince Albert, Lethbridge welcomes Brandon and Medicine Hat hosts Red Deer.

Legionnaires finally return home tonight

After playing their first eight games of the season on the road, the Home Hardware U18 AAA Legionnaires will finally play their home opener tonight against the Notre Dame Hounds. 

The Legionnaires are winners of their last five games in a row heading into tonight’s matchup at 8:00pm from InnovationPlex. 

In other minor hockey action this weekend, the Innovation Credit Union Wildcats will host the Battlefords Sharks for a pair of games tomorrow at 7:45pm and Sunday at 1:15pm from S3 Arenas. 

The Source for Sports U18 AA Broncos host the Notre Dame Argos tonight and the Lumsden-Bethune Lions on Sunday, the Pure Chem U15 Broncos visit Yorkton and Melville this weekend, and the SWT U13 Broncos host the Regina Royals tomorrow and visit Moose Jaw on Sunday. 

The Full Line Ag U18 AA Wildcats have a three-game road swing in Warman today, Melfort tomorrow and Prince Albert on Sunday, and the Graphic Edge U15 Wildcats host the Southeast Gold Wings this weekend.

McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins help Oilers beat Hurricanes

Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had four points each as the Edmonton Oilers beat Carolina 6-4 to hand the Hurricanes their first loss of the season, while the Calgary Flames suffered their first setback of the year in a 6-3 loss to Buffalo. 

In other NHL action on Friday, Vancouver fell 4-3 to the Minnesota Wild in overtime for their fifth straight loss to start the season, the Maple Leafs beat the Stars 4-3 in OT, the Habs routed Arizona 6-2, Ottawa beat Washington 5-2 and Vegas beat Winnipeg 5-2.

No Canadian teams are in action tonight, but a busy Saturday includes Edmonton hosting St. Louis, Ottawa welcoming Arizona, Montreal hosting Dallas, Toronto entertaining Winnipeg, Calgary hosting Carolina and Vancouver playing their home opener against the Sabres.

Schneider staying on as Blue Jays' skipper

The Toronto Blue Jays took the interim tag off Manager John Schneider announcing they've reached a three-year deal with the team's former bench coach with a team option for 2026.

Schneider led the Jays to a 46-28 record after taking over from Charlie Montoyo at the All-Star break, and Toronto made the postseason as a wild card team before being swept by the Seattle Mariners in the first round.

Meanwhile, the Houston Astros, the team that swept the Mariners in the ALDS, are up two games to none on the New York Yankees in the American League Championship series. Alex Bregman hit a three-run homer and Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings in a 3-2 win for the Astros on Thursday. The series shifts to the Big Apple for game three on Saturday. 

Game three of the NLCS is on tap tonight with Philadelpha hosting San Diego. The series is tied at a game apiece.

Doubleheader kicks off penultimate week of CFL season

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats host the last-place Ottawa RedBlacks to kick off week 20 of the CFL season. Hamilton can clinch the league's final playoff spot with a win and a loss by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who host the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday.

Later, it's the Edmonton Elks' last chance this season to snap their 16-game home losing streak when they host the BC Lions.

In the NFL last night, Marco Wilson and Isaiah Simmons ran back interceptions for touchdowns late in the first half as the Arizona Cardinals snapped their eight-game home losing streak with a 42-34 win over the New Orleans Saints.

High School 9-man football playoff action this afternoon has Shaunavon hosting Lumsden at 4:00pm. In 12-man football, the Vanier Vikings host Estevan Saturday in Moose Jaw with the winner coming to Swift Current to face the Colts in the Tier 2 final next weekend.
