Broncos sweep weekend set with Warriors

The Swift Current Broncos opened the WHL pre-season with a pair of wins over the Moose Jaw Warriors on the weekend. 

Josh Filmon had a four-point game for the Broncos in a 5-4 win over the Warriors on Friday, while Joey Rocha made 30 saves in a 3-1 win at home on Saturday. 

The Broncos continue the exhibition schedule with a neutral site game against the Regina Pats tomorrow night in Estevan.

Legionnaires, Wildcats open pre-season schedules

The Home Hardware U18 AAA Legionnaires opened their pre-season with a pair of losses, falling 4-3 to Notre Dame on Saturday and 5-2 to Moose Jaw on Sunday.  The Legionnaires host Notre Dame for their next game on Saturday night. 

The Innovation Credit Union U18 AAA Wildcats picked up a win and two ties in a pre-season tournament over the weekend at Fairview Arenas. The Wildcats tied U16 Team Sask Green 1-1 on Friday and the Regina Rebels 3-3 on Saturday before beating SAHA 3-2 on Sunday.

The Wildcats are off to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, for more pre-season action next weekend. 

High school sports well underway

With the new school year now underway, the new season of high school sports got started in earnest on the weekend. 

The Swift Current Comp Colts football team registered their first win of the year over the weekend in Moose Jaw as a stout defensive showing by the Colts propelled them to a 14-0 victory against the Vanier Vikings. 

Swift Current recovered four Vikings fumbles and forced an interception. While on the other side of the ball Colts receiver Ryder Smith caught a pair of first-half touchdowns to round out the scoring. 

Swift Current (1-1) will next take to the field in Yorkton on September 24.

The Ardens soccer team got their league title defense started with a 14-0 win over Yorkton Sacred Heart and an 8-0 win over Yorkton Regional. The Colts soccer team will open their season on Tuesday. 

The Senior Colts Volleyball team claimed silver at a season-opening tournament in Prince Albert, going 2-and-1 in the round-robin and winning playoff matches against St. Mary’s and Meadow Lake before falling to Saskatoon Centennial in the final. The Colts have another tournament in Meadow Lake this weekend.

Riders picked apart by Bombers in Banjo Bowl

Zach Collaros threw for four touchdowns as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers scored on their first eight possessions en route to a 54-20 rout of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 18th Banjo Bowl on Saturday at IG Field.

The 6-7 Riders host the Edmonton Elks in their next game on Friday night.

Blue Jays lose to Rangers, start huge homestand tonight

The Toronto Blue Jays dropped a 4-1 decision to the Texas Rangers on Sunday for just their second loss on a 10-game road swing. 

The Jays return home to take on the Tampa Bay Rays for five games in 72 hours this week, including a doubleheader on Tuesday and an afternoon game on Thursday.

Jose Berrios starts for the Jays in tonight's opener against Tampa's Cooper Criswell. 

Ageless Brady shines in NFL season opener

Tom Brady threw for 212 yards and a touchdown as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hammered the Dallas Cowboys 19-3 in the first NFL Sunday nighter of the season. Brady, at 45 years of age, became the oldest quarterback to start an NFL game.

Tonight, Russell Wilson will face his former team as the Denver Broncos visit the Seattle Seahawks for the season premiere of Monday Night Football. Wilson spent 10 seasons with the Seahawks, winning Super Bowl 48 against the Broncos in 2014.
