WCBL Final kicks off tonight

The WCBL Championship series gets underway tonight with the Okotoks Dawgs hosting the Moose Jaw Miller Express in game one of the best-of-three series. 

Moose Jaw last won the Harry Hallis Memorial Trophy in 2002, while Okotoks have won five championships since then, most recently in 2019, and are coming off a record 43-win regular season. 

The Millers beat the Dawgs in both meetings between the two teams back in June. 

Game one will be in Okotoks with game two in Moose Jaw tomorrow. Game three, if necessary, will be Thursday in Okotoks. 

Four southwest athletes in action as Canada Games resume

Week two of the Canada Summer Games starts up today in Ontario’s Niagara Region with a new set of events and athletes in the spotlight. 

The male box lacrosse tournament will have Swift Current’s Cameron Greenley and Carter Michaluk playing for Team Saskatchewan, and they’ll face Manitoba in their opening game this morning. 

Meanwhile, Griffin Duncalfe of Swift Current and Shaye Wall of Wymark will be playing in men’s volleyball and Team Saskatchewan will face Alberta in their opening match this morning.

The games continue until Sunday.

Canada beats Finland to stay perfect at World Juniors

Canada wrapped up the round robin a perfect 4-0 at the World Junior Hockey Championship with a 6-3 win over Finland Monday in Edmonton. 

Mason McTavish had a goal and two assists and Olen Zellweger pitched in with three helpers. Connor Bedard and Ridly Greig had a goal and an assist each while William Dufour, Tyson Foerster and Brennan Othmann also scored. 

The win puts Canada on the top of Group A, and they will face Switzerland in Wednesday’s quarterfinal. The other quarterfinal matchups will have the USA facing Czechia, Finland taking on Germany and Sweden battling Latvia.

The semifinals are on Friday and the medal games are on Saturday.

Canada sets roster for Women's Worlds

There will be a lot of familiarity on Canada’s roster for next week’s World Women’s Hockey Championship in Denmark. 

Hockey Canada announced the roster on Monday which includes 19 players from last year’s gold medal-winning team, and 18 players who won Olympic gold in Beijing back in February. 

Highlighting the roster are Marie-Philip Poulin, Brianne Jenner, Sarah Nurse and Saskatoon’s Emily Clark. 

Canada starts the tournament against Finland on August 25.

Slumping Blue Jays lose to surging Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays have now lost eight of their last eleven games after dropping a 7-3 decision to the Baltimore Orioles Monday night. 

Struggling lefty Yusei Kikuchi allowed a season-high six runs, three of them earned, over just 3.1 innings for his sixth loss in 11 starts. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. hit his 24th home run of the season for the Jays in a losing cause. 

The three-game set continues tonight with Alek Manoah starting for Toronto against Dean Kremer.
