Broncos earn long weekend split

The Swift Current Broncos split a pair of games over the long weekend. 

Kayden Sadhra-Kang scored the winning goal in the final minute of overtime as the Broncos beat the Prince Albert Raiders 5-4 at home on Friday night. Clarke Caswell, Raphael Pelletier, Josh Filmon and Connor Hvidston had the other goals for Swift Current. 

The Broncos trailed 4-0 midway through the second period on Saturday in Regina, but Mathew Ward, Brady Birnie and Josh Filmon scored three unanswered goals. The rally fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Pats. 

The Broncos host Regina in their next game on Friday. 

The Home Hardware U18 AAA Legionnaires swept a Thanksgiving weekend set in Estevan, beating the Bears 3-2 in the shootout on Saturday and 5-2 on Sunday. The Legionnaires head to Yorkton next weekend. 

The Innovation Credit Union U18 AAA Wildcats picked up a pair of wins in Weyburn, beating the Gold Wings 3-1 on Saturday and 4-0 on Sunday. They host Notre Dame in their next game on Sunday. 

The Source for Sports U18 AA Broncos came away with a pair of big wins over Yorkton, beating the Terriers 4-0 on Saturday and 6-2 on Sunday. 

The Pure Chem U15 AA Broncos also swept their weekend, beating the Northeast Wolfpack 5-2 on Saturday and the Martensville Marauders 8-3 on Sunday. 

The Graphic Edge U15 AA Wildcats won in overtime twice en route to winning the B Final at the Saskatchewan Challenge Cup, while the U13 AA Wildcats placed fourth at a tournament in Saskatoon. 

Laycock, Constantini win Curling Stadium Series event in Swift Current

Reigning Olympic Mixed Doubles gold medallist Stefania Constantini of Italy took the Women’s championship of the S3 Group Curling Stadium Series event at the Swift Current Curling Club with a 7-4 win over Korea’s Seungyoun Ha in the final on Monday. 

On the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock defeated Japan’s Riku Yanagisawa 9-2 in the final. 

The next event at the Curling Club is the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown which features 28 of the best women's teams in the world, including three-time world champion Silvana Tirinzoni, who won the Grand Slam of Curling's season-opening event in North Bay, ON, over the weekend.

The Western Showdown runs from Thursday to Sunday.

RedBlacks play spoiler on Thanksgiving

The Ottawa RedBlacks kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 24-18 win over the Montreal Alouettes in a CFL Thanksgiving Day matinee Monday. The Als would have clinched a home playoff game with a victory.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders fell 18-14 to Hamilton on Friday and will now head into the bye week two points ahead of the Tiger-Cats for the crossover playoff berth. Their next game is against Calgary on Oct 22 at Mosaic Stadium.

Meanhwile, Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdown passes to Travis Kelce as the Kansas City Chiefs edged the Las Vegas Raiders 30-29 in the NFL Monday nighter.

Opening night in the NHL

The NHL regular season begins in earnest tonight with the first set of games in North America. 

The New York Rangers host the Tampa Bay Lightning in a rematch of last season’s tense Eastern Conference Final. The Lightning have been to the last three Stanley Cup finals. Out west, the Vegas Golden Knights visit the Los Angeles Kings. 

The San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators officially opened the regular season with a pair of games in Prague, Czechia over the weekend. The Preds won both those games. 

Four Canadian teams will open their seasons on Wednesday night.

All four MLB Division Series kick off today

After a wild card round that lived up to its name, the Major League Baseball playoffs continue with the best-of-five division series starting today. 

The Seattle Mariners, fresh off an historic come from behind win to eliminate the Toronto Blue Jays, will head to Houston to take on the Astros, while the Cleveland Guardians visit the New York Yankees in the other American League series. 

In the National League, the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies, while the Los Angeles Dodgers welcome the San Diego Padres, who knocked off the 101-win New York Mets in their wild card series.
