Yankees lock up AL East with win over Blue Jays

The New York Yankees wrapped up their 20th American League East Division title with a 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.

Aaron Judge walked four times as he failed to homer for the seventh straight game to stay one short of the AL single-season home run record of 61. Lusty boos from Yankees, and even Jays fans, were heard throughout Rogers Centre as Judge was issued the walks on full-count pitches.

George Springer hit a lead-off homer run in the first inning and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. hit an RBI single for the Blue Jays, who still saw their magic number to clinch a playoff spot reduced to two after the Baltimore Orioles lost 13-9 to Boston.

The Jays can clinch a spot in the postseason with a win and an Orioles loss tonight. Mitch White will start for Toronto against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole.

Jets win, Flames lose in NHL pre-season

Daniel Torgersson had a pair of goals and Kyle Connor added a goal and two helpers as the Winnipeg Jets beat Ottawa 5-3. Elsewhere, Seattle blanked the Calgary Flames 3-0.

Four Canadian teams are in NHL pre-season action tonight as the Montreal Canadiens visit the Toronto Maple Leafs, who announced Tuesday they will be without captain John Tavares with an oblique strain for up to three weeks. Also, the Flames and Edmonton Oilers renew the Battle of Alberta tonight at the Saddledome.

Meanwhile, it's a quiet night in the Western Hockey League tonight with just one game on the schedule as the Winnipeg ICE will travel to Prince Albert to take on the Raiders. The Swift Current Broncos will host Winnipeg for their next game on Friday.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Paul Henderson's famous goal on Vladislav Tretiak that clinched the Summit Series for Canada over the Soviet Union in 1972.

To mark the milestone anniversary, the Royal Canadian Mint has announced a new two-dollar coin that features a full colour image of two members of the '72 Canadian team on the inner core, and the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II will still be featured on the obverse. The new toonie will enter circulation today.
