The City of Swift Current will be applying for the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program government grant to help assist with the costs of renovations and rehabilitation of the St. Patrick Field.

Dean Robson, General Manager of Community Services for Swift Current was at this the most recent meeting of City Council, looking for resolution from the council to committ $425,000 over the next two years.

Robson says the plans they have for the spot will benefit the community.

"We would like to keep the green space there. We would like to have some active and passive areas, shelters and lighting and probably specifically an athletic or sport field of regulation size."

Regardless of whether or not the application is successful, the renovations and rehabilitation of the space will move forward according to Robson.

"We actually had it in the budget. The improvements were not as big. We had a smaller play equipment, we didnt have the fence line, we didn't have the irrigation. We didn't have a lot of the requirements in the next two budget years so we would have probably been looking at a third budget year to complete it totally. So this gives us a good opportunity to make it whole right away."

In terms of a timeline, Robson says they hope to have funding in place by 2017 and the project completed by early 2018.

Concept plans have already been drawn up in regards to paths, bike trails and lighting.

Robson says the rehabilition will improve the west side and the building on the land will stay and they plan to do studies to discover the best community use for it.
