Officers from Swift Current stopped more than 250 vehicles between December 1 and 3 during a Canada Safe Driving Week enforcement initiative.

The main focus of the weekend initiative was on commercial vehicle safety, slowing to 60 when passing emergency vehicles, and keeping impaired drivers off the road.

According to a media release issued this morning, Saskatchewan RCMP officers from the Swift Current, Moose Jaw and Regina Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan units and Morse detachment participated, along with officers from the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol.

A total of 71 tickets were handed out for drivers failing to slow to 60 kilometres an hour while passing emergency vehicles with their lights engaged.

The fastest passed a stopped police vehicle while going 114 kilometres an hour.

There were 15 drivers slapped for speeding, 30 for stop sign infractions, and seven each for driving without vehicle registration and for using a cell phone while driving.

In the three-day span, officers issued 64 warnings.
